The 12 x 32mm vial has become the industry standard for most chromatography autosamplers (except for headspace autosamplers which accept 20 mm wide autosampler vials). The most common vial is the 9mm screw tread vial, which has an opening large enough to easily pipette while still having the neck and closure compatibility for most autosamplers. Vials and their compatible closures and caps come in many types, to accommodate the various sample types, testing methods, and storage needs.
They are used in medical and forensic labs and in the environmental, pharmaceutical, and food industries. Autosamplers can handle vials, tubes, microtiter plates, and PCR plates.
